Cyber crooks pose as cop on FB, cheat director of Rs 10,000
Miscreants creating duplicate Facebook profiles in the name of Tamil Nadu police officials and asking money from their friends via Messenger has become a headache for the department as a Malayalam film director lost Rs 10,000 thinking that he is sending money to his friend Julius Caeser, Assistant Commissioner of Washermenpet range in Greater Chennai Police.

While the officer had already blocked a fake account in his name and also lodged a complaint with the city police, miscreants have opened another account in his name and approached his friend Sethu Eyyal, who directed a Malayalam movie called Shyamaragam. “Since the message claimed the money was needed for my wife’s medical emergency, he did not think twice to send the money in the UPI ID mentioned in the message. However, he grew suspicious since he got messages only in English and not in Malayalam as I usually talk to him. So he contacted me,” said the Assistant Commissioner. The official said he has hardly spoken to the director-friend on Messenger as he would always call him directly over the phone.
Since the officer has already lodged a complaint in the city, he has advised Sethu Eyyal to lodge a complaint in his hometown.
It may be recalled that miscreants had opened accounts in the name of different police officials including those in the rank of ADGP and DGP and police said the miscreants have been operating from Rajasthan and Odisha.
