While the district already has five boys clubs, the new ones have been set up in Pullarambakkam, Vellavedu-Kudapakkam, Gandhi Nagar in Sholavaram, Azhinjivakkam near Periapalayam and Pattaikuppam near Arambakkam. While the Azhinjivakkam club has 100 members, the other clubs have 50 each, both boys and girls.

An initiative by Tiruvallur police in collaboration with Don Bosco Anbu Illam, a child rights organisation, and HCL Foundation, the five clubs were inaugurated by Tiruvallur police superintendent P Aravindhan on Saturday.

Speaking to DT Next, the official said the five areas were not random choices. “A lot of men indulging in crimes have been arrested from these areas and the young boys who do not have much to do can easily get misled. So, we decided to provide them with a platform to hone skills in sports activities and make them participate at state and national level events,” said the SP.

While the main focus would be on football, volleyball and kabaddi, indoor activities such as carrom board, chess have also been procured. The school playgrounds, panchayat grounds will be used by the boys and girls for practice.

“There will be a caretaker and trainer for each club, and we have made arrangements that they get paid by the government,” said the official.
