Battery-run eco-friendly loco launched

The Chennai Division of Southern Railway (SR) has taken its eco-friendly initiatives to new heights by testing its first battery-cum AC operated shunting locomotive. Named ‘Pasumai’ (greenery), the dual mode shunting locomotive designed by the Electric Loco Shed in Arakkonam would work in both electric and non-electric (unwired) sections.

Engineers at the loco shed converted a 23061/WAG5HA electric locomotive into an eco-friendly and cost-effective model with batteries having a continuous run time of up to four hours. With a hauling capacity of 1080 metric tons (weight of 24 coaches) and a maximum shunting speed of 15kmph, Pasumai would be advantageous in easing shunting requirements of 24-coach empty rakes, especially from yards to major stations, a senior railway officer said.

The official pointed out that the locomotive would be cost effective compared to the existing ones which operate on fossil fuel. Also, the dual shunting locos would help move rakes to and from stations even during disruption in electric traction, thereby saving time. Another significant feature of the locomotive was ability to reach adverse accident locations and break down spots without OHE (overhead electric traction).
