“Over the next 48 hours, the condition of the sky in Chennai and surrounding areas is likely to be cloudy. Light rain may occur in some areas. Thunderstorms with light to moderate rain are also likely to occur across the State,” said N Puviarasan, director, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

Besides, districts like Virudhunagar, Theni, Tenkasi, Tirunelveli and Kanniyakumari are likely to receive moderate rainfall and thunderstorms. Moderate rains are expected in the State for the next five days, with coastal areas expecting rain during nights and early mornings, and interior regions receiving rains in the evenings.

“With an upper air circulation in the Bay of Bengal, the one end of the circulation is converging with the winds from the west. The wind direction is somewhat north to south with a slight tilt to the east, so the southern parts of Tamil Nadu are more beneficial in getting the convergence, as there is nothing from the west in northern Tamil Nadu for creating convergence,” said weather blogger Pradeep John, who runs the Facebook page Tamil Nadu Weatherman.

Temperature in the city is expected to be between 32 degree Celsius and 25 degree Celsius with cloudy skies.
