Combined storage up by 100 per cent from past year

The combined storage of four lakes that supply drinking water to the city has crossed 50 per cent, thanks to the water released by the Andhra Pradesh government from Krishna river and rain in the catchment areas.

As per Metro Water data, the lakes had a combined storage of 5,933 mcft against the total capacity of 11,257 mcft, on Thursday. Also, all the four lakes are receiving inflow with Red Hills lake receiving 971 cusecs of water. “Reservoirs in Andhra Pradesh are full and water is being released to Chennai. Apart from this, catchment areas received good rain on Thursday as well as during the earlier spells,” a Metrowater official said.

Poondi lake had 1,529 mcft against its full capacity of 3,231 mcft. Cholavaram lake (full capacity 1,081 mcft) had 128 mcft and Red Hills lake (full capacity 3,300 mcft) had 2,094 mcft. Chembarambakkam lake had 2,182 mcft of water against its full capacity of 3,645 mcft. According to Regional Meteorological Centre data, Red Hills received 13 cm of rainfall during the 24 hours till Thursday 8.30 am. Poondi and Cholavaram received 5 cm rainfall each. On Wednesday, the lakes had a combined storage of 5,808 mcft with Red Hills lake receiving 160 cusecs and Cholavaram lake without any considerable inflow. On October 29, 2019, the lakes had a combined storage of 2,325 mcft of water only.
