VS Jayaraman of Motilal Street Residents’ Welfare Association pointed out that the street has been completely taken over by the shoppers to park vehicles. “Despite complaints to the authorities, no action has been taken. There is hardly any space for residents and pedestrians,” the association said.
He also added that the vehicles that come for delivery of material elsewhere use Motilal Street for parking. On the other hand, shoppers said that they are forced to park vehicles on the street due to the lack of parking facility in most parts of T Nagar.
“Parking has been streamlined in Pedestrian Plaza (Thiyagaraya Road). However, it is difficult to find vacant space. Also, we have to walk a long distance to reach Ranganathan Street from Thiyagaraya Road,” P Vishnu a shopper said. Meanwhile, the Greater Chennai Corporation has delayed the opening of multi-level car parking, which is constructed near Pondy Bazaar.
In September, Minister SP Velumani said that the facility would be opened to the public in October. “The opening of the facility was delayed as we are running trail run. The multi-level car parking will be opened in December,” an official said. Once completed, the multi-level car parking in T Nagar would be the first such facility in the city constructed by the Chennai Corporation. The civic body had commenced the construction work of the multilevel parking in February 2018.
