428 fireworks violation cases booked in Chennai

The city police on Saturday booked 428 cases for violating the restriction on bursting crackers on Deepavali.

The maximum number of cases, 239, were booked in the West Zone comprising areas such as Anna Nagar, MKB Nagar, Villivakkam, Koyambedu, Avadi and Poonamallee, followed by 95 cases in South, 57 in East and 37 in North. Last year, 204 cases of cracker violation were booked, said police.

It may be recalled that bursting crackers was permitted only for two hours on Saturday – 6 am to 7 am and 7 pm to 8 pm. The violators were issued a challan and fine was collected, said police.

Meanwhile, the fire control room received 40 distress calls in the city, of which 33 calls were related to minor fire accidents. The number of distress calls received across the State was 106.

In Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, three houses with thatched roofs caught fire on Saturday afternoon after a rocket cracker landed on the roof. Fire and Rescue personnel put off the fire, but the roofs and some valuables were burnt in the accident.

In Government Kilpauk Medical College Hospital, 16 people were admitted at the burns ward from the city with minor injuries on Saturday and were discharged on the same day. Across the State, 599 cases were booked for violating the restriction on bursting of crackers.
