KMC treats eight with burns this Deepavali

A total of seven cases were treated as outpatients and one was treated at the special ward set up specially to treat Deepavali-related injuries. The hospital authorities said there were no major injuries and the number of patients reporting with burns during Deepavali had reduced this year.

“We usually see about 50-60 patients with cracker burns but the number was fewer this year. Outpatient cases were managed effectively and the inpatient is also stable. There were no fatalities due to burns on Saturday,” said Dr P Vasanthamani.

The 10-bed special ward at Kilpauk Medical College at Burns Unit will be open for a few more days to attend to patients.

Rajiv Gandhi Government General Hospital also reported a few patients complaining of eye injuries and breathing problems. Many others were brought in to the casualty following road accidents during the festivities.

At least 4,300 ambulances were dispatched throughout Tamil Nadu by the 108 GVK EMRI ambulance service provider on Saturday, and as many calls were received with regard to queries on burns and allied issues. Selva Kumar, head of operations at GVK EMRI, said the number of ambulance requests to the 108 call centre has reduced by about 600-700 this year.
