CMRL invites bids to construct 11.61 km elevated line on Corridor-5
Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has invited bids for the construction of the 11.61 km elevated line from Puzhuthivakkam to Sholinganallur of the Metro’s new 47 km Corridor-5, connecting Madhavaram and Sholinganallur.

Apart from the construction of the elevated corridor, the contractor has to construct 11 stations that dot the line in the southern part of the city. In this section, the elevated corridor work begins after Puzhuthivakkam station and ends beyond Elcot station at Sholinganallur. The successful bidder would be entrusted with construction of 11 elevated stations at Madipakkam, Kilkattalai, Echangadu, Kovilambakkam, Vellakkal, Medavakkam Koot Road, Kamaraj Garden Street, Medavakkam Junction, Perumbakkam, Global Hospital and Elcot and all associated works in Corridor-5.
Earlier, CMRL received three bids for the Power House-Porur junction elevated line as part of Corridor-4 -- connecting Light House and Poonamallee bypass.
As of now, the CMRL has invited bids for 10 packages for the 118.9 km Chennai Metro Phase 2 project and 2nd for Line-5 for which bids have been invited. With this tender, Corridor-5 tender notices are now pending for its Puzhuthivakkam-Porur Junction (approx. 10 km) and Alwartiru Nagar-Madhavaram Milk Colony (approx. 20 km) sections.
Like Corridor-4 Light House (Poonamallee’s elevated section), Corridor-5 will be partly financed by the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB) through a US Dollar 438.75 million (approximately Rs 3266 crore) loan. The loan’s concept review was approved on April 7, 2020, and a formal appraisal decision is currently pending.
On Corridor-4, the CMRL had opened bids for the construction of the 7.955 km elevated section of Corridor-4 from Power House to Porur junction on Arcot Road and construction of nine elevated stations. In another package, the bids were opened to construct 7.945 km elevated line from Porur Junction to Poonamallee Bypass of Chennai Metro’s phase 2 Corridor-4.
The CMRL has also invited bids for construction of 29 underground stations on Corridor-3 from Madhavaram to Taramani stretch under-five packages to ensure timely completion of the work. Officials said that the tenders were invited under five packages – Madhavaram to Perambur, Aynavaram to Kellys, KMC to Royapettah, Radhakrishnan Salai to Adyar Junction and Adyar Depot to Taramani link road. “CMRL also scrutinising the bids received for construction of 9 km tunnels from Venugopal Nagar to Kellys Station and 12 km tunnels from Kellys Station to Taramani Road junction in Corridor-3.
