With the onset of the Cyclone Nivar and the continuous rainfall, the Chembarambakkam lake is expected to reach its total capacity of 24 feet by noon. Hence the State Government has directed the PWD officials to release the excess water by noon, around 12pm, today.
The Greater Chennai Corporation has also alerted the local residents of the bank and the nearby slum tenants to evacuate the place as soon as possible. The officials of PWDs were said to be put in place to ensure the evacuations are done at the earliest.
Nearly 1000 cubic feet water is expected to be released today. Apparently, the excess water from the Chembarambakkam lake will be released into the Adyar river. And hence zones 10,11,12 and 13 are kept under a watch which includes areas like Jafferkhanpet, Alandur and Valasaravakkam through which the Adyar river flows.
The Chennai Corporation has also said that as many as 77 relief centres have been kept ready. Meanwhile, reports also said the Potheri lake in Kattankulathur has reached its maximum level and poses a danger due to the absence of a proper sluice.
