Corpn official takes Rs 5,000 to pass cremation bills, held

A sanitary inspector with the Greater Chennai Corporation, who refused to sanction bills for cremating 233 bodies for a contractor at an electric crematorium without a bribe of Rs 5,000, was caught red-handed in a trap laid by sleuths from the Directorate of Vigilance and Anti-Corruption on Tuesday.

The complainant, a contractor of the electric crematorium in Injambakkam, approached the DVAC with a complaint in which he claimed that he had submitted bills for payment for cremating 233 bodies at 

Injambakkam, to the sanitary inspector, Ward 196, Zone 15, Sholinganallur, but the sanitary inspector, Vigneswaran demanded Rs 5,000 as bribe for passing the bills. Following the complaint, a trap was laid by the DVAC when Vigneswaram was caught receiving the bribe amount and was then arrested.
