Parts of the City continued to experience light and steady showers in the late evening after a short break from the heavy rainfall that lashed the city for the past two days.
Nivar made landfall near Puducherry in the early hours of Thursday, bringing heavy rains to the union territory and neighbouring Tamil Nadu, India Meteorological Department (IMD) officials said. Nivar weakened into a severe cyclonic storm after it crossed the coast near Puducherry, the IMD said.
Parts of the City like Egmore, Nungambakkam, Marina, Kodambakkam, Guindy and city outskirts like Pallavaram, Chromepet, Tambaram, Velachery and Medavakkam were the first ones to get the light showers on Thursday evening.
While high tides are still visible in the Marina beach, onlookers are still prohibited near the sea, by the Greater Chennai Corporation. While the IMD has reported that the Nivar cyclone has weakened into a deep depression, three persons were killed and an equal number injured as the very severe cyclonic storm Nivar wreaked havoc in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Thursday.
IMD also updated "The Deep Depression Nivar over south Rayalaseema moved nearly northwards with a speed of 13 kmph in last 06 hours and lay centred at 1730 hrs IST of today over south Rayalaseema near Lat. 13.6°N/Long 79.3°E, about 30 Km west-southwest of Tirupathi and 115 Km west-northwest of Chennai."
