Burevi cyclone: Water from Puzhal lake to be released at 3 pm as Chennai received steady rainfall overnight

With the weakened deep depression of Burevi stalled near Rameswaram, parts of Chennai saw steady rains from midnight, as a result the Puzhal lake is filling up too fast. District authorities have decided to discharge the excess water as more than 2 thousand cubic feet of water is coming into the lake every second.
District Collector Ponnaya announced that the water reserve of Puzhal lake will be opened at 3 pm today as a precautionary measure.
In the recent update, it was also reported that due to heavy showers in Chennai, the Puzhal lake is nearing a capacity of 21.20 ft and hence it is planned to release nearly 500 cubic feet of water per second by 3.00 pm. A flood alert has also been issued to the people of Narawarikuppam, Vadakara, Grantline, Puhal, Vadaperumbakkam and Manjambakkam villages near the banks of the lake.
According to recent report by Tamil Nadu State Disaster Management Authority, Moderate rain is likely to occur over Ariyalur, Chennai, Chengalpattu, Dharmapuri, Kancheepuram, Kanyakumari, Krishnagiri, Pudukkottai, Ramanathapuram, Salem, Thanjavur, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Tiruvallur, Tiruvannamalai and Vellore districts during next three hours.
