Low pressure persists, city to see rain for next 48 hrs

The low-pressure area by the Gulf of Mannar has remained static and continues to bring rainfall to southern districts of Tamil Nadu and coastal areas. Rains will persist for another 48 hours, said experts.

On Monday, certain areas of Thoothukudi noted 16 to 11 cm rainfall, while areas of Nagapattinam, Karaikal and Kanyakumari received 9 cm each.

“The low-pressure area over Gulf of Mannar still persists. Thunderstorm with lightning is likely to occur at isolated places over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry and Karaikal. Heavy rains are likely in isolated parts of the State,” said N Puviarasan, director, Area Cyclone Warning Centre, Regional Meteorological Centre, Chennai.

In Chennai, Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam saw 3.8 mm and 7.7 mm of rainfall respectively. Over the next 48 hours, the city will see light to moderate showers with chances of thunderstorms, with maximum and minimum temperatures between 30 and 24 degrees Celsius.

“With a new circulation in the Arabian Sea, we will see easterly winds moving in easily in next two days and interior districts will get rains, like Erode, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, the Nilgiris, Dindigul, Theni, Virudhunagar, and Thenkasi. Other districts will also get moderate rain,” said weather blogger Pradeep John, who runs the page Tamil Nadu Weatherman.

Thunderstorm with heavy rain is likely over Ramanathapuram, Thoothukudi, Tirunelveli, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Mayladuthurai, said weather officials. Meanwhile, isolated areas across the State, particularly coastal districts, are expected to receive light to moderate rains with thunderstorms. Intense but short spells are expected in the city in the nights and mornings, added John.
