The arrested persons were identified as Thangamani (24) of Madurai, Vignesh (24) of Sivaganga, Ashwin Krishnan (26), an IT firm employee from Vadapalani, Arun (26), a mechanic from Choolaimedu, and Karthik (27), an auto driver from KK Nagar.
Raju, a head constable attached KK Nagar police station and working in MGR Nagar station, was arrested on Monday after the video of him being assaulted went viral. The police had used the same videos to track down the people who allegedly assaulted the policeman.
The incident happened around 10 pm when he was on his way back home after duty. Raju stopped his two-wheeler at the bus stop near Ambika Empire Hotel on Jawaharlal Nehru Salai (100 Feet Road) and asked a young woman waiting at the bus stop to come with him.
When she refused, he allegedly grabbed her hand after which she raised an alarm. Another woman who was there at the bus stop joined the victim and residents of the locality and passers-by gathered. Angry that a police official misbehaved with a woman, some of them assaulted Raju, the video of which was widely shared.
