The accused were identified as A Kathir (33) of Pudupet and A Kaja Moideen (38) of Thoothukudi. Kaja Moideen is a history-sheeter, according to the police.
On December 14, head constable G Miller Raj of Triplicane police station realised that his son’s bicycle, worth Rs 8,000, that was parked outside his house in the police quarters was stolen.
Inquiries revealed that three more bicycles of head constables Kumaresan, Rajan and Gayathri were also stolen. Based on a complaint, a special team was formed to nab the suspects. After combing CCTV footage from the locality, officials found that two men were behind the series of cycle thefts. The accused were secured on Monday and based on their inputs, nine bicycles were recovered.
Investigation revealed that the duo targeted bicycles over motorcycles, calculating that their owners would not lodge a complaint. “Some of the bicycles they stole were expensive. However, they sold all of them for just Rs 500, as that is all they required to buy liquor for the day. They have been indulging in such thefts for about three months,” said an official. The duo was remanded in judicial custody.
