Chennai Corporation indefinitely defers user fee for garbage clearance

The Greater Chennai Corporation said on Thursday that it has decided to defer indefinitely the collection of user fee for garbage clearance from property owners. This has been done in view of the pandemic.

“Residents, commercial establishments and residents’ welfare associations have requested the civic body to withhold the order. Based on the instruction of the Chief Minister, the civic body withholds the order,” the statement by Corporation Commissioner G Prakash said. 

On Tuesday, the civic body had said that user charges would be collected from January 1 as per the Solid Waste Management By-laws 2019. As per the new rules, the civic body could collect user charges based on the size and usage of buildings. 

The civic body could collect user charges based on the size and usage of buildings. Residential buildings with built area up to 500 sqft would have to pay Rs 10 per month. For those with built area between 501 sqft and 1,200 sqft, the fee would be Rs 25. The charge would be Rs 50 and Rs 100 respectively for residential buildings with a area between 1,201 sqft and 2,400 sqft, and residential buildings above 2,401 sqft.

In case of commercial establishments and schools, places of worship, the charge would be Rs 500 per month.

For events to be held in open public spaces, except funerals and government awareness activities, the civic body would collect Rs 5,000 to Rs 20,000 based on the number of people participating.
