On December 30, the deceased A Surya of Ambedkar Colony and a few others allegedly hurled stones at a car under the influence of alcohol around 10 pm and based on a complaint by one S Raja Saravanan, Surya was brought to MGR Nagar police station on December 31.
However, since the complainant withdrew his petition, Surya was reportedly let off with a warning. But Surya suddenly developed complications on Tuesday and was rushed to the ESIC hospital in KK Nagar. From there, he was shifted to Government Royapettah Hospital (GRH) but died without responding to treatment. His body was sent to the mortuary in Kilpauk Medical College Hospital.
On information, MGR Nagar police received a complaint from Surya’s parents and registered a case under Section 174 of CrPC. When contacted, a senior police officer said his parents have lodged a complaint that Surya complained of stomach pain and died in the hospital. However, Surya’s friends gathered near MGR Nagar police station alleging that Surya died due to the assault by police in their custody.
Police said they will decide on the course of action once they receive the post-mortem report. Surya had some previous petty cases pending against him, said police.
