The victim, Abrose Banu, had to get 20 sutures. She continues to be under medical observation at a private hospital in the city. The police said she is out of danger as the cut was not deep, but she has difficulty in speaking.

The accused has been identified as Prabakaran of Tiruchy. Abrose Banu, a divorcee with two children, developed a relationship with Prabakaran six months ago. They befriended each other over the phone.

Two months ago, they moved in together to a rented house in Velachery.

The woman’s family, who were in the know of the relationship, reportedly advised her to leave Prabakaran.

Prabakaran allegedly demanded Rs 50,000, which he had spent on Banu’s beautician’s course, and it led to an argument between them a few days.

Banu’s family members reached the house and sent Prabakaran out.

On Wednesday morning, Prabakaran reached the woman’s house and demanded his money back again. When she refused, he slit her throat with a blade he had and fled the spot. Banu was rushed to the hospital. On information, the Guindy police went to the spot and conducted inquiries. A case was registered and a special team was sent to Tiruchy to nab Prabakaran.
