Patta plea unheeded for 10 years, man tries suicide at Collectorate

A 52-year-old man who tried to set himself on fire on the Chengalpattu collectorate premise on Monday was arrested by the police.

The arrested was identified as Velmurugan of Taramani in Chennai. Police said Velmurugan owns a piece of land in Cheiyur in Chengalpattu district. 

He had applied for patta for the land 10 years ago but is yet to receive the same. Velmurugan had visited all the government offices over the past many years but there was no progress concerning his petition and he was upset that the officials were not even giving a proper response to his queries. 

On Monday, Velmurugan came to the Chengalpattu district collectorate to participate in the public grievance meeting.

While the meeting was on, Velmurugan suddenly took a kerosene can out and emptied its content all over his body. The public and the police who were at the spot poured water on Velmurugan and stopped him from immolating self. 
Later, based on the District Collector’s directive, Chengalpattu Town police arrested Velmurugan. Further inquiry is on.
