Duo impersonates actor Arya to extort money from German woman, arrested

The central crime branch (CCB) police arrested two men for cheating a Sri Lankan woman with German citizenship of several lakhs after posing as actor Arya on WhatsApp.

The accused were identified as Mohammed Arman of Pulianthope and his cousin, Mohammed Hussaini. The police said Arman created fake social media profiles in the name of actor Arya and befriended the woman. 

Later, he extorted Rs 70 lakh from the woman on the promise of marriage and cheated her.

The victim, Vidja, had written to the PMO and the President that the actor received Rs 70.40 lakh claiming to be financially struggling due to the lockdown and moved the court to register a case against him. 

The CCB police recently summoned the actor for inquiry, after which the duo was secured. They were remanded in judicial custody on Tuesday. Two mobile phones, a laptop and an iPad were seized from them.
