Pallavaram weekly market reopens after 7 months

The market was first closed in March 2020 due to the first wave of COVID. Later, after the lockdown restrictions were relaxed, the market reopened in the end of November. But it was closed again in March following the onset of the second wave of the pandemic. Now, after seven months, the market was reopened on Friday morning.

There were fewer stalls put up due to the drastic fall in footfall. The Cantonment Health Department monitored the market and ensured that public and vendors followed social distancing norms. The traders were cautioned against letting down their guard, pointing out that all standard operating procedure should be followed for the market to function.

The Friday market in Pallavaram started as a cattle market during the British period. Before the lockdown, about 2,000 stalls were put up on both sides of the two km stretch from Tirusulam railway gate to the Pallavaram bus stand every Friday.

Meanwhile, there has been a slight increase in the number of positive cases in Chennai and Chengalpattu districts in the last few days.
