College girls catch snatcher after a chase, hand him over to cops

Victims are often caught unawares when snatchers strike on the street and flee with their valuables, be it a phone or chain or a bag, and the suddenness of the incident immediately causes confusion, shock and panic to him or her. But not these two college girls — K Gayatri (19) of Kalpakkam and Deepalakshmi (19) of Perungalathur — who chased and caught a snatcher who tried to escape with one of their phones.

CHENNAI: The incident happened in Perambur on Friday evening when the girls, first-year students of a private college in the city and athlete trainees, were returning to their room in GKM Colony. Police said they were walking by the second street of Loco Scheme Colony when a man who followed them from behind suddenly snatched Gayatri’s mobile phone worth Rs 14,000.

While the snatcher took to his heels and tried to get on a bike which was kept ready by his accomplice at a distance, the two girls chased him and pushed the snatcher off the bike.

The bike rider managed to flee, but a passerby joined the girl duo and secured the snatcher. On information, Peravallur police rushed to the spot and the snatcher was handed over to him. He was identified as D Karthik (25) of GKM Colony and the snatched phone was recovered from him.

A few hours later, the accomplice, identified as G Surya (25) of GKM Colony, surrendered at the police station. When contacted, police said the duo was remanded in judicial custody.
