Rs 73 crore collected from 1.40 L property owners in Chennai
As the last date for paying property tax without penalty ends on Friday, around 1.40 lakh property owners in the city have paid their taxes for the first half of 2022-2023 financial year.
According to a Chennai Corporation official, as much as Rs 73 crore has been collected from April 1-13. “All 1.40 lakh property owners have availed incentives of 5 per cent of their total half yearly tax or a maximum of Rs 5,000,” the official said.
The civic body has fixed a target of Rs 120 crore collection in 15 days. With two days remaining, the official expressed that the target can be reached.
For now, it has asked the property owners to pay taxes as per the old rates as the new revision will only be affected after gathering public opinion. The difference amount will be collected after ratifying the government order.
Over 1.16 lakh owners had paid their taxes on time in April 2021 (for the first half year) and availed incentives. Last year, between October 1 and 15, the civic body had collected around Rs 120 crore.
It may be noted that the city has more than 12 lakh properties. If property owners miss April 15 deadline, they will have to pay 2 per cent penalty for the delay.
Counters to be opened on holidays
A Chennai Corporation senior official said that the property owners can pay their taxes at the counters or online, as the staff of Revenue department will be working on Thursday and Friday (both public holidays).
