Stalin visits Tania who underwent surgery for Romberg Syndrome

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin visited Tania, a 9-year-old girl from Avadi, who was suffering from Parry Romberg Syndrome at Saveetha Medical College and Hospitals on Monday. She is the youngest patient with the most severe deformity ever reported in the country.

Tania had appealed to Stalin for intervention as she faced discrimination and bullying at school.

Though there’s no permanent cure or treatment to stop the progression of the disease, the surgical plastic and vascular procedure helps in repairing the wasted tissue. To repair the damage to her face, bone and muscle grafting was also done. She recently underwent a surgery procedure at a hospital and is recovering well.

What is Parry Romberg Syndrome?

Also known as Romberg’s disease, it's a rare atrophic disorder characterised by a progressive deterioration of the skin and soft tissues of the face

It typically affects the left side of the face, and is more common in girls.

There is no cure and treatment that can stop the progression of the disease.

However, severity and specific symptoms vary from one person to another.

Reconstructive or microvascular surgery can repair wasted tissue. It's not fatal, and the disease eventually stabilises.

The exact cause of the disease is unknown.
