Women commission fulfils requests of Puzhal women prisoners

CHENNAI: Fulfilling the desires and requests of women prisoners, the State Commission for Women is currently working on facilitating education for children of women prisoners in Puzhal Central jail. Besides this, the commission, upon request, provided toys for children of women inmates and television sets recently.

AS Kumari, Chairperson, TN Commission for Women began visiting various prisons in March this year. The commission till date, has visited Vellore, Coimbatore, Madurai prisons along with Puzhal Central Jail and Kokkirakulam sub jail in Tirunelveli district.

Speaking to DT Next, the Chairperson said, “The commission received letters from women inmates requesting for education for their children at rescue homes. I visited the homes and met the children who are studying in Class 8 and above.”

“We are planning to initiate possible mechanisms to facilitate them with classes and also help others with jobs through self-help groups. We are in talks with the district Collector about it,” added the Chairperson.

Subsequently, while meeting the women inmates in Puzhal, requests were made for extra television sets and toys for the children of the inmates who are living at a crèche in the Central jail.

“During the visit, we promised to fulfil their requests. Following which, we provided them with television sets and toys for the children, a couple of months ago. The commission is particular on the welfare of all women and we are actively working on achieving the same,” noted the chairperson.
