Murder suspect nabbed after 17 years in Chennai

CHENNAI: A murder suspect, who escaped from police radar after coming out on bail in 2005, was nabbed by the Chennai police on Wednesday after 17 years. The arrested suspect was identified as E Rajan alias Poovai Rajan alias Kulla Rajan (47), a native of Avinashi in Tirupur.

He was booked and arrested for murdering a cab driver K Shajahan (21), that happened in December 2001. Rajan and his six other friends rented a car and they travelled to T Nagar and Pallavaram and later on the same day night, Rajan and his friends asked the cab driver, Shajahan, to take them to the Injambakkam beach area where they consumed alcohol and later quarrelled.

At that time, driver Shajahan was beaten to death and the others had escaped in the car. Within a couple of days, police arrested seven suspects, including Rajan, and they were remanded in jail. When the trial was on in the year 2005 Rajan, who was out of jail on bail, managed to disappear and the police arrested him on Wednesday.
