Stalin to open second arm of Velachery flyover
Velachery MLA JMH Aassan Maulaana has tweeted that the second arm of the twin flyover will be opened by the Chief Minister on Saturday at 11.30 am.
CHENNAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin will be opening the second arm of the Velachery twin flyover connecting Velachery Bypass to Tambaram for public usage on Saturday.
Velachery MLA JMH Aassan Maulaana has tweeted that the second arm of the twin flyover will be opened by the Chief Minister on Saturday at 11.30 am.
The 640-m-long first level of the twin flyover that will take off from Velachery Bypass Road and land on the road to Tambaram near the Velachery MRTS station was built at a cost of Rs 78.49 crore. This flyover would land around 190m ahead of the MRTS bridge.
The opening of the second arm of the flyover has come nearly 10 months after the opening of the 1,200-meter first arm of the double-decker flyover at the busy Vijaya Nagar junction connecting Taramani Link road and Velachery bypass in November last year. It was built at a cost of Rs 67 crore. The work on the double-decker flyover at Velachery started in January 2016 at the cost of Rs 108 crore. However, the cost of the project escalated due to delays in land acquisition and Covid-19.
K Shanmugham, a resident of Velachery said that opening the Velachery bypass- Tarambaram stretch of the flyover would ease traffic congestion on the busy Vijaya Nagar Junction. He also complained about the closing of median gaps on Velachery Main Road near the flyover. “Motorists were allowed to turn right in front of Grand Mall. Now, it has been closed and the motorist have to take a turn below the Velachery MRTS bridge. This is causing hardships to thousands of parents dropping children at schools in Ram Nagar and Vijaya Nagar,” he said.
