Centre appoints Justice Raja as new ACJ of Madras High Court

CHENNAI: The Union Ministry for Law and Justice on Monday declared that Justice T Raja of the Madras High Court will function as the new Acting Chief Justice of the chartered HC from September 22. The announcement has come against the backdrop that the current ACJ Justice M Duraiswamy will be attaining the superannuation on September 21.

“In exercise of the power conferred by Article 223 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint, Justice T Raja, senior-most Judge of the Madras High Court, to perform the duties of the office of the Chief Justice of that High Court, with effect from 22.09.2022 consequent upon the superannuation of Justice M Duraiswamy, Judge, who is performing the duties of the Chief Justice, Madras High Court,” the central government said in a notification.

Justice Raja was elevated to the Madras HC as the additional judge in 2009. Justice Raja enrolled with the bar council in 1988 and started his practice before Madras High Court and later shifted to New Delhi to practice at the SC, Delhi HC, and Central Administrative Tribunals. He was appointed as the Additional Advocate General of the TN government in 2008.

Justice Raja will be in the service till May 23, 2023.

After Justice Duraiswamy, Justice Paresh Upadhyay and Justice PN Prakash are other seniors who will be retiring from service on December 13, 2022, and January 11, 2023, respectively.
