CHENNAI: A 45-year-old man, belonging to the Narikuravar community, set himself on fire inside the Madras high court premises on Tuesday afternoon, allegedly depressed over the lackadaisical behaviour from government authorities in issuing a community certificate to him and his family members.

The man was identified as Velmurugan, a resident of Padappai in neighbouring Kancheepuram district.

Police sources said that Velmurugan was vexed over the fact that he was made to run from pillar to post to get the certificate and attempted suicide near the mediation centre building in Madras High Court premises, as a protest.

Advocates and police personnel who were at the scene rushed to his rescue on hearing his screams and put off the fire. Even as the ambulance was reaching the scene, a video of the man, in a completely burnt state, explaining his plight was recorded and has been circulated.

The man was moved to the Kilpauk Medical College Hospital for treatment for his burn injuries. Police said that Velmurugan suffered grievous burn injuries. A case has been registered and further investigations are on.
