Chennai shops should keep dustbins to segregate waste: GCC

CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Corporation has asked the shop owners to keep two separate dustbins to segregate biodegradable and non- biodegradable waste. The civic authorities identified 78,136 shops in the city, of which 26,242 shops have dustbins to segregate waste. The shop owners who dump on the road will impose a fine of Rs 500 .

"At least 5,200 metric tonnes (MT) of solid waste was collected from all the 15 zones in the city. The door-to-door collection is done by the sanitation workers, who separate biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste. It is being sent to decentralised waste management plants," noted the GCC release.

The non-biodegradable waste is segregated at the Corporation's Resource Recovery Centers (RRC) and given to the re-cyclers. Biodegradable wet waste from the received waste is recycled into compost in composting centers and into bio-gas (Bio CNG) in gasification plants. Apart from the recycled waste, the remaining waste is taken to the Kodunkaiyur and Perungudi dump yard.

Additionally, steps have been taken by the civic body authorities to report complaints from residents about garbage piled up in public places. Residents of Tondiarpet, Royapuram, Thiru Vi Ka Nagar, Anna Nagar and Ambattur (some areas) zones shall register their complaints through complaint number: 1913.

Residents of areas under Kodambakkam, Valasaravakkam, Alandur, Adyar, Perungudi and Shollinganallur, where the cleaning work is carried out by Urpesar Sumeet Company, can file complaints in 1913 and 8925522069 regarding garbage.

Those from the remaining areas under Thiruvottriyur, Manali, Madhavaram, and Ambattur (some areas) zones can make their complaints with the numbers 1913 and 1800-833-5656 for the same.
