Residents protest against Metro line realignment in Madhavaram

CHENNAI: Opposing the realignment of Metro line passing underneath the residential colonies in Madhavaram, as part of the Metro rail phase II construction, several residents in the area staged a protest on Tuesday afternoon.
Residents say that they were forced to stage a protest as they did not receive proper response from the concerned department, despite having approached them multiple times.
A resident said, “As per the Detailed Project Report (DPR), the original land acquired for the construction is a vacant land. However, alleging some feasibility issues, the new alignment is proposed to pass under residential areas like Palaniappa Nagar and KKR Gardens. This certainly came as a shock to all of us.”
“The realignment will affect many houses in the area, further making the houses vulnerable during construction. If no action is being taken by the CMRL in due time, we will take the issue further,” added the resident.
Meanwhile, denizens also tell DT Next that they have started receiving notices from the CMRL. The notice stated, “Prior to the commencement of the work, existing building and bore well survey has to be conducted inside every property. The project representatives will access your property and shall also take photographs.”
The notice further warned residents that if not cooperated, CMRL will not be held responsible for any settlements, cracks which might occur during phase II construction.
When contacted a senior CMRL official confirmed that the department will hold talks with the residents on Wednesday.
