CM Stalin unveils statues of freedom fighters in Gandhi Mandapam

CHENNAI: Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday unveiled the statues of freedom fighters Veerapandiya Kattabomman, Maruthu brothers and V O Chidambaranar on Gandhi mandapam campus in Guindy.

Accompanied by state information minister M P Saminathan and Chennai mayor R Priya, Stalin visited the Gandhi Mandapam where he unveiled the statues of Veerapandiya Kattabomman erected at a cost of Rs 18 lakhs, statues of Maruthu Brothers erected at a cost of Rs 34 lakhs and renovated wood press pulled by VO Chidambaranar in Coimbatore prison plus his bust-sized statue raised at an estimated cost of Rs 43 lakhs by the state information and public relation department in Guindy.

The state government had earlier announced in the State Assembly during the debate on the demand for grants for the department that it would erect statues for the freedom fighters in the state capital. The CM also laid foundation stone for constructing a hall with statues for former MLA V K Palanisamy, former minister C Subramaniam, former MLA Pollachi N Mahalingam and freedom fighter Thali Palayakarar Malayandi Venkitapathy Yethalappar at a cost of Rs 6.90 crore.
