Crackdown on traffic violations continue
Police collected an amount of Rs 3.77 crore in clearing the pending cases.
CHENNAI: The Greater Chennai Traffic Police have collected Rs 8.97 crore in fines from pending drunk driving cases, disposing of about 8,674 cases, as of Monday. The police have also booked around 95,000 traffic violators and collected Rs 3.77 crore fine from them in the last three months.
As part of a special drive since January 22, the police call centres have been contacting persons booked for drunk driving. Last week, 661 pending cases were disposed of and Rs 68.1 lakh fine was collected.
Also, 361 warrants have been issued for the attachment of property in lieu of the fine amount. The special drive through call centres would continue, said a senior police officer. After the fine amount was hiked to Rs 10,000, many do not pay up despite receiving intimation from the e-court system, an official release said.
In the last three months, the police have booked and fined around 95,000 traffic violators and collected Rs 3.77 crore in clearing the pending cases. Officials were instructed to capture traffic offences such as stop-line violations, pillion riders without helmets, triples riding and defective number plates in their phone cameras after which cases were registered.
Between April 3 and April 8, surprise checks were conducted at 169 places and more than 17,000 cases were disposed of.
