Women-driven Rapido bike taxi service launched in Chennai
In the first phase, it will be operated at Thousand Lights, Teynampet, Egmore, Saidapet, and Government Estate Metro rail stations.
CHENNAI: In encouraging women to ride in Chennai Metro Rail and ensuring them a safe environment, the CMRL launched 50 women-driven bike services at Nandanam Metro station on Thursday.
It introduced the feeder service at Metro stations by collaborating with Rapido, a bike and taxi booking platform.
Through this collaboration, the CMRL has achieved creating an employment for women alongside providing a reliable transportation option for metro riders, particularly women. Initially, these bike services will be available at the following Metro stations: Thousand Lights, Teynampet, Egmore, Saidapet, Government Estate and will be extended to all metro stations based on demand, said the press note.
The initiative aimed at promoting sustainable transportation systems was launched by Rajesh Chaturvedi, director (Systems and Operations) of CMRL along with S Satheesh Prabhu, AGM (RSO), Rapido
An CMRL higher official said, “Through an MoU signed with Rapido, the service providers will be allowed to pick and drop passengers at the station premises.”
About getting clearance with RTO, the official added: “The concerned department shall act in case of a violation.”
