Actor Oviya

CHENNAI: Tamil actor Oviya, whose popularity hit the peak after being part of Bigg Boss, has been setting the internet abuzz after an alleged intimate video featuring her was leaked online.

But the actor, whose comment in Bigg Boss, "Neenga shut up pannunge", had gone viral, is clearly not one to crumble.

When social media users, all of them men, obviously, went to her handle to troll her over the 17-second-long alleged sex tape, Oviya countered in with undisguised sarcasm and quips, which won her more fans.

When one social media user commented, "Madam, a 17-second video of yours has leaked," Oviya simply replied, "Enjoy."

Another user commented, "The video could have been longer." To that, Oviya responded, "Next time, bro."

When some asked for the leaked video to be sent to them, Oviya promptly replied cheekily: "Send me the link too."

After giving it back to the troller, Oviya did indeed issue a statement, one without any note of clarification or denial, much less apology. Instead, the statement was social and political.

In the statement, Oviya expressed her views on social issues, emphasising that her opinions stem not just from her identity as an actress but as a fellow citizen of the country.

"It's better to express my thoughts as a fellow human being rather than just as an actress," she said, adding that her opinions might cause discomfort for some people.

"When I think about whether we can do anything about it, the first thing that comes to mind is raising our voices."

She added that stepping out of one's home feels unsafe, and under the guise of culture, the freedom of others is often threatened.

The actor voiced her concerns about the alarming rate of sexual abuse against young children, expressing fear about living in an unsafe society.

"Culture is about living as humans and treating others with humanity. If we say we live in a free India, the threats I receive for my opinions make me feel like this is an unsafe India. If someone like me, who is in the public eye, receives such threats, I can only imagine the dangers faced by ordinary women who are yet to even start their lives," she added.
