Bare necessities: Summer is the time to get rid of the clutter. Clear out your wardrobes; remove unnecessary accessories like heavy carpets, throws, cushions and duvets in your bedrooms. Your home needs to breathe. Keep all these things in storage and pull them out again in the winter. Rearrange your furniture, so as to maximise space and allow room for movement. Summer is about space, light and air, not about clutter.

Ventilate your rooms: The right ventilation is the key to surviving summer. In the summer months we crave light and open spaces, so you need to really evaluate the placement of your furniture. Rearrange your space to maximise flow, take out items and move items around to allow for the best access to natural light and movement within the space. Avoid heavy window treatments that restrict the circulation of air.

Summer colours:  Using lively colours in your décor is the best way to spell summer. White is always the first choice for summer, it reflects the heat and brightens the room. Adding accents of sunshine yellow, aqua blues, vibrant corals and lime greens can really liven up your room and make it summer ready! Use these colours as accents, either in your upholstery, your cushions or even in your wallpaper.

Indoor plants: A really good way to feel connected to the outdoors is by bringing them in. By adding plants, some small and some large, you will not only clean your indoor air but you will bring life inside, making you feel more connected to the outdoors. Indoor plants add colour and natural style to your interiors. They are excellent air purifiers, and also infuse rooms with a sense of calm. Studies have shown that they can boost concentration and lower blood pressure. So go green this summer!

Pick the right  materials
: To get through the scorching heat, you need to select your fabrics wisely. The heavy silks and chenilles on your window curtains, and velvets and silks are a complete no-no for the summer, you need lighter and natural fabrics that breathe. Replace your silk or woollen carpets with lighter dhurries in fun colours. Use light and natural fabrics that are easy to wash, as they too will be sweating it out this summer!
