Celebrated on May 28 every year, World Hunger Day that aims to celebrate sustainable solutions to hunger and poverty, was originally launched by The Hunger Project in 2011. This year, the focus is on good nutrition.

Ahead of this year’s WHD, here are a few facts about world hunger.

  • The Hunger Project is a global movement of people working in authentic partnership for the sustainable end of hunger. It works in partnership with people in Africa, South Asia and Latin America to develop effective, sustainable and gender-focused strategies.
  • Poverty is the principal cause of hunger. The causes of poverty include poor people’s lack of resources, an extremely unequal income distribution in the world and within specific countries, conflict, and hunger itself.
  • In 2010, an estimated 7.6 million children — more than 20,000 a day — died. Poor nutrition plays a role in at least half of these deaths.
  • While hunger exists worldwide, 526 million hungry people live in Asia. India is home to 194.6 million undernourished people, the highest in the world.
  • This translates into over 15 per cent of India’s population, exceeding China in both absolute numbers and proportion of malnourished people in the country’s population.
  • You can do your bit by joining the ‘Feed the hungers challenge’ launched by FoodBank India. Any person willing to take up this challenge needs to post a selfie with the number of food packets they are willing to donate to the needy in any part of the country. After that, they need to tag five friends, asking them to take up the challenge. To spread the word on a more massive scale, a simple inclusion of a few hashtags (#FightAgainstHunger, #FoodBankIndia, #FeedTheHungerChallenge), would spark the curiosity of anyone observing.
