Kodaikanal still won’t: Sofia Ashraf calls out Unilever, again

Chennai-based rapper Sofia Ashraf, of the Kodaikanal Won’t song that went viral last year, is back—telling Unilever that the mercury mess their factory has made in Kodaikanal wouldn’t just vanish without the company cleaning it up.

In association with Jhatkaa.org, a campaigning organisation, Sofia has released a new video, ‘Why Kodaikanal Still Won’t’, this time ‘against the numerous misleading statements HUL has been making all these years’.

Sofia hasn’t gone down the rap road this time. It’s more of a mock news update, inspired by the style of comedian-journalist-anchor John Oliver.

For example, Ashraf calls a Unilever statement on the Kodaikanal factory issue a “meticulously crafted, deluded piece of drivel… that even Tolkien might have been happy to have cookedup.”

According to Ashraf, the mercury sediments in a stream flowing in to highly sensitive Pamba Shola forest had five times more mercury than should be normally present.

The forest, by the way, contains plants that are “rarer than heroines in Kollywood who can actually speak Tamil.” Ashraf goes on in this vein for about five minutes, and the video that’s already a hit on social media, is an absolute must-watch.
