Inspired by the ‘ nakash ’ technique of the Chola legacy that brings out the extraordinary skills of the South Indian goldsmiths in traditional temple jewellery, my collection is a heritage collection jewellery. In this technique, the craftsman shapes the sheet of gold into fabulous forms, decorates it with complex designs and then incorporates the finest of the rubies, emeralds, diamonds, uncut diamonds and other stones. The result is simply stunning pieces of art.
You have graduated in diamonds and designing from Gemological Institute of America (USA). How useful has the experience in GIA been for you?
Even before joining the course at GIA (USA) in diamonds and designing, I have always been keen and excited by seeing the lovely designs of jewellery worn by my mother and aunts. I have been curious to create such designs. I wanted to get into it more professionally that’s why I got into the course. The education helped me shape up my interest and start the business more professionally.
Contemporary women prefer statement pieces to traditional jewellery. Comment
Unlike earlier, women now have more occasions to adorn jewellery. Before it was only weddings. Nowadays women need jewellery for going to work, attending casual dinners, cocktail parties and more such events. For weddings, women still prefer traditional and for other occasions statement pieces take over. I would also like to say jewellery, no matter how big or small, is so close to your heart that you should enjoy wearing it. Every jewellery is a piece of art and heart.
Collection Q – For the Queen Within will be help on September 24 and 25 at Meenu Subbiah's store in North Usman Road, T Nagar.
