You possess the power to have time on your side

When the Rolling Stones sang Time is On My Side, it was like a sermon on the secret of time. As the concept of time management catches on to become the most-chanted corporate mantra, it’s time we go beyond the mundane of doing everything within limited time!

The Pressure of Time

Time has a deep impact on both the matter and mind. And I consider the ability to manage that impact to be real time management. Then only, we will be able  to surmount the pressure of time. The impact of time on the matter is quite gross and visible like an apple rotting or our body changing with time. The impact of time on the mind is even stronger but people seldom notice it. How you feel in the morning is different from how you feel in the afternoon, evening or night. The state of mind and the feelings also change. Similarly, thought patterns also get affected by change in seasons. Our ancestors had mastered this interconnection. They had in-depth knowledge of how the Moon affects the mind etc. They accounted for the changes of the mind, mood swings and the like.

Crossing the Mind

So are we a slave to the mind? No, because there is something beyond the mind – the intellect. When intellect is strong, it overcomes the influence of the mind. When intellect is weak, then  emotions overtake the mind. What if intellect also gets affected? Then one would need to go beyond the intellect and that is what we call the Self. That represents Siva tatva! Lord Siva is the master of time, maha-kaal or “grand-time.”

Your commitment and dedication pull you above the mind. Otherwise you feel good one moment; bad another moment, even in the best situation you have felt miserable. Fools follow the mind and not the intellect. And end up being unstable. The higher things like knowledge, enlightenment, etc are only for brave people, not for chicken-hearted who run away from reality. One who is not strong cannot realise the Self. And that strength comes when you don’t care too much for your feelings or passing thoughts and go with the commitment in your life.

Ahead of Time

So when one takes refuge in the Self, the impact of time is minimised, both on the mind and the body. That’s why the knowledge of the Self, Brahma-gyaan  is considered the highest. Being in the Self means being centered in the Self or the Atma and once you are established in this state nothing can shake you.  This is the real purpose of spiritual practices like yoga and meditation. That’s why I say meditation is the highest form of prayer and sadhana (spiritual practice). In a state of deep meditation, the mind and intellect come to NOW and one gets in touch with the Self. Such a state has the power to turn the time on your side.
