Featuring a charpoy (an old-fashioned jute rope cot with a wooden frame, traditionally used in India as a terrace bed), the ad details the product as a “traditional Indian daybed” that is “extremely comfortable… made from beautiful maple timber with strong mortise and tenon joints,” with “hand-woven bedding” using manila rope. However, rather than the fancy description of this basic cot that is a common sight in almost all rural households, it is the price of the charpoy that has caught the attention of the Twitterati. The charpoy is priced at a whopping $990 (approximately Rs 50,000).
A Twitter user mainakde wrote, “If this is real, Indians can mint money in Australia selling our old stuff – Charpoy, Cane Furniture, Mora, Clothes Horses, Clay Utensils...”
Meanwhile, another user, Azar Umais, tweeted, “I never knew that I had these gold, expensive than iPhone 7, all this time and I’m just thinking of selling my kidney.”
