Oviya and her army
With her raw and uncompromising attitude on Bigg Boss, Oviya was clearly this year’s breakout star. From armies in her name to film merchandise and songs based on her dialogues like ‘Fish you’, ‘Shut-up Pannunga’ and ‘Spray adichipuduven’, the young actress emerged the biggest winner, despite exiting the show half way on medical grounds. The actress became an overnight sensation as she trended across social media platforms through the course of the show and many months after. Her kokku natta kokku became an anthem of sorts. With promising films in her kitty and directors making a beeline to cast her in their films, the actress is certainly to watch out for.
Suchi leaks
From nude photographs and clips of noted faces to allegations of being manhandled by Dhanush, #Suchileaks stirred up the hornet’s nest. It was raining scandalous pics and tweets from the official Twitter handle of popular singer Suchitra aka Suchi. Some of the tweets also hinted at affairs between actresses like Trisha, Andrea, Dhivyadharshini and Amala Paul with many actors. Explicit pictures of a few upcoming actress were tweeted out. Suchi’s husband tried to do some damage-control and claimed that Suchi was disturbed mentally and apologised on her behalf.
Vishal, Tamil cinema’s dark horse
After defeating his opponents in Nadigar Sangam election two years ago, Vishal managed to pull off a thumping victory again in Tamil Nadu Producers’ Council elections. Vishal won the presidential post garnering 144 votes more than his rival S Radhakrishnan of Maruthi films. The actor when on to promise that he would take the piracy issue head-on and ensure action against the people behind the famous piracy website Tamil Rockers. Not just that, on the film front, Thupparivalan garnered good response from the audience, and was declared a hit. But the end of the year didn’t go well with the actor. His hopes of contesting in RK Nagar bypoll election was a big let-down for him, as even his nomination wasn’t accepted the election commission. However, that actor has promised that he will get into real-time politics, and he will begin a party in 2018.
Curious case of Dhanush’s ‘real’ parents
It all started in November 2016, when a couple from Madurai, Kathiresan and Meenakshi, claimed that actor Dhanush was their son, claiming that he ran away from hostel when he was in Class 11. Based on their complaint, in February 2017, the Madurai bench of High Court ordered the Madurai Medical College to check whether the actor had either a scar or a mole as mentioned. Though the doctors didn’t find any identification marks as mentioned, Dhanush was dragged to the court many times. In April 2017, the actor won the case.
