Another section, who is waiting for ‘salon time’ are furry babies at home. Pet care experts from the city share with us how one can keep their pets shipshape and happy during the lockdown.
Sangeetha Sabharish, the chief groomer at Cutz to Cuddlez, The Dog Spa, tells that taking care of pets’ basic needs like food, training and grooming are vital during this period. “As a certified canine nutritionist, I always recommend nutritious home-cooked food. The basic thumb rule of nutritious dog food is 50 per cent cooked grain or oatmeal, 25 per cent cooked meat/paneer/daal and 25 per cent steamed vegetables or fruits. When it comes to pet grooming, it is not just about aesthetics, it’s about a dog’s overall health. It is necessary to check your dog’s body on a daily basis. Keep in mind that a tired dog is a happy dog. So, instead of just taking them for walking, make them do some exercises,” says Sangeetha.
Some pets are so used to go for an outing at the nearby park or beach. But after lockdown, they are forced to stay indoors mostly. “You have to keep the pets busy and reduce their boredom. Mental stimulation or brain games enriches your dog’s lives. Teach them simple tricks, nose work games, etc. Also, train them on basic obedience. This will decrease the likelihood of your dog developing behavioural issues and will keep them content throughout the day,” the canine expert adds.
Diyya Vummidi, one of the partners of Heads Up For Tails in the city, says that it is essential for pet parents to keep their pets entertained while staying indoors. “Engage the pets in more indoor activities like a treasure hunt, puzzles, etc. Make use of this time to train the pets and understand them better. When it comes to grooming, I have seen some adventurous pet parents trying to cut the dog’s hair at home itself. It is risky; so, I don’t advice pet parents to cut their pets’ hair at home. If it is hairy breeds like Shih Tzu or Golden Retrievers, bathe them and brush their coat every day for at least 15-30 minutes. You can even tieup the hair, especially near the eyes,” says Diyya.
Pet care tips at home
- Brush their coat daily. Run your fingers through their coat to check on ticks and fleas. If you find any, remove them with tweezers or apply a drop of neem oil on it so that the tick extracts itself.
- Mix coconut oil and neem oil in equal parts and massage your dog before bath. This will keep the ticks at bay.
- Use a cotton ball dipped in apple cider vinegar solution (1 tsp ACV mixed with 1 cup of warm water) to clean your dog’s ears.
- Massage their paws with a mixture of organic coconut oil and olive oil. (Refrigerate the mixture before use)
