On Sunday, the PM Narendra Modi had said that for basic and essential health and development factors, Kerala is worse than Somalia, leading to public umbrage and a strong letter of complaint from Chief Minister of Kerala Oommen Chandy that was made public on Tuesday.

Among the top Twitter trends was #PoMoneModi, which rips off ‘Po Mone Dinesha’, a famous line from a Malayalam film by actor Mohanlal and translates as ‘Son, you’re dismissed, better head home’. One of the tweets trolling Modi put forth ‘BJP vote share in Kerala is 6 per cent and Kerala literacy is 94 per cent. Totally matching equation. #PoMoneModi’.

Oommen Chandy, in his letter to Modi, said, “The people of Kerala were shocked to hear from you certain baseless comments in your recent election rally speech in Kerala. In that speech, you made statements that had nothing to do with the reality and likened Kerala to Somalia. This is unbecoming of a Prime Minister and has created a great deal of agony and protest.” Kerala votes on Monday for its next government.
