The move comes after last year’s Class 12 mathematics question paper being extremely tough, reducing lakhs of students to tears on the examination day.
The revamp of the mathematics question paper pattern was announced in a circular on Wednesday evening. From next year, CBSE plans to introduce short-answer type questions carrying two marks. This is the first time it is introducing two mark questions. Simultaneously, CBSE plans on reducing the number of taxing, higher-order thinking skills (HOTS) questions, with an overall mark weightage of 10, split into two sections. One section would carry six marks, and the other, 4.
J Ajeeth Prasath Jain, senior Principal at Bhavan’s Rajaji Vidyashram in the city said that the new Math question paper model is student- friendly. According to him, CBSE has come up with this model based on the representation from parents and students about the difficulty level of the Math question paper in the last three years. “The Board has done a detailed analysis and found the difficulty level of Math question paper high last year. Now more marks have been allotted for understanding and recalling instead of skill based questions,” he said.
Students too hope that the difficulty level would be only a fraction of what it has been in recent years.
