Roars in Rajya Sabha

J Jayalalithaa, fondly called as Puratchi Thalaivi and Amma by her party cadre, who was a woman of triumph and courage throughout her life, was known for her intelligent speeches both in terms of content and language.

Here are the gist of a few speeches of the ‘Iron Lady of Tamil Nadu’ in Rajya Sabha and some similarities between her and DMK founder leader CN Annadurai with regard to their stint in the Upper House

POWER SITUATION

  • Mr Deputy Chairman this is my maiden speech, I request you to give me at least 15 minutes. I deem it a honour to stand here and speak in the same Rajya Sabha where 22 years ago, in 1962 our great departed leader Anna rose to make his maiden speech
  • TN has been facing acute shortage of electricity for more than a decade. As a result, the State was forced to impose power cuts ranging from 25 pc to 100 pc
  • The Tamil Nadu CM in his letter on June 1, 1982, to the PM, sought to allocate full output from Kalpakkam to TN. The Centre accepted and gave a commitment. Centre’s commitments cannot become void with the efflux of time

ENTRY INTO RS ON  SAME DATE

  • April 3, 1962: CN Annadurai became a member of Rajya Sabha
  • April 3, 1984: J Jayalalithaa became a member of Rajya Sabha
  • 5-YR COMPLETION
  • February 1967: Annadurai completed his term
  • January 1989: Jayalalithaa finished her term
  • Seat number 185: The seat allotted to Jayalalithaa in the Rajya Sabha was Number 185, the same place occupied by Annadurai

CAUVERY

  • The Centre sent a 5-member team to assess the flood situation in TN.
  • Since the study team has seen for itself the extent of the damage - the TN government earnestly hopes that the amount asked for will be sanctioned
  • If we study the history of India over the past 100 years we notice that at regular intervals - not only TN - but the whole of India has been affected by drought
  • In this context, it is vital for the Centre to seriously consider and expedite a project to link the Ganga with the Cauvery

TAMIL LANGUAGE

  • The Government of India recognises Sanskrit as an ancient classical language and spends vast sums of money for research and development in the interest of preserving our ancient cultural and literary heritage.
  • Tamil is an ancient language. In fact Tamil is the oldest living ancient classical language in the world
  • According to the Government of India - the characteristics of a classical language are 7. Tamil has a body of literature called the Sangam Anthologies and the grammar Tholkappiyam - which are assigned to the first few centuries before the birth of Christ. It is doubtful whether any other language can match Tamil in this regard.
  • “Here is a beauty with brains,” – Khushwant Singh said after the maiden speech of Jayalalithaa in RS. Even Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was impressed.

SRI LANKA

Whatever be the foreign policy of the Government of India that is also the policy of the AIADMK. Time and again this has been reiterated by the Tamil Nadu CM Dr MGR. The Indian Government has clearly defined its stand to find a political and not a military solution to the ethnic problem of Sri Lanka.  I appeal to all the RS members to stand solidly behind the Government and co-operate with whatever decision the PM Indira Gandhi takes in this regard.
