Six people have been arrested from Ghodbunder Road here and demonetised notes of Rs one crore face value were seized from them, city police said today.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Zone V) Sunil Lokhande told PTI that acting on a tip-off, a team of Kasarwadavali police laid a trap near a housing complex last night.
The police team spotted six persons alighting from a four-wheeler and started going towards the building.
"The accused tried to escape from the spot when they sensed that the men standing in plain clothes were actually policemen. However, they were immediately nabbed," the DCP said.
Three of them were carrying bags filled with old currencies, he said adding, "We seized a total of 9,985 notes in denomination of Rs 1,000 and 500."
When they were grilled about the cash, they gave evasive replies about the source of the notes and that to whom and to whom it was meant to be delivered in exchange of the new currency.
An offence has been registered against the six persons under relevant sections of the CrPC, he said.
The accused were identified as Suresh Zondge, Malkan Pawar, Uttam Patil, Naresh Kulkarni, Mill Lubana and Amol Shinde.
