Mr Kumar moved the confidence motion amid strong protests by the RJD members in the House.
Coming down heavily on the government, Leader of Opposition Tejaswi Yadav dubbed the alliance between the JD (U) and the BJP for the formation of the government as a murder of democracy.
He said Mr Kumar drifted apart from the grand alliance only with an intention to bolster his image.
Mr Yadav said Mr Kumar's party - JD (U) - registered victory only in two seats in the 2014 Lok Sabha election, rubbishing the CM's claim on clean image and principle.
The Chief Minister would reply at the end of the debate.
Earlier, the RJD members raised anti-government slogans in the portico of the State Assembly.
