However, no injury was reported, they said.

The sources said the militants hurled a hand grenade followed by heavy firing with automatic weapons towards the house of Congress leader Imtiyaz Parray at Hajin, Bandipora. Security forces, guarding the house of Congress leader, also retaliated and the exchange of fire continued for some time. However, the militants managed to escape under the cover of darkness.

Imtiyaz is son of  Mohammad Yousuf Parray, a former MLA who formed "Ikhwan" a group of surrendered militants. The group later supported security forces in counter-insurgency operations in the Kashmir valley, particularly in Bandipora, in 90s.

First commander of Ikhwan was later killed by militants in September 2003 along with his two associates at Hajin in Bandipora.
